New roof for Victoria – plans unveiled

New roof for Manchester Victoria
Network Rail has released some pictures of the design of the proposed new roof at Manchester Victoria. The design will use the same kind of transluscent lightweight material that is already used at Piccadilly. Subject to planning permission, construction will begin in Summer 2013 and be finished by Winter 2014. Network Rail will spend £16 million, with TfGM contributing £4 million.

With regard to the planning position, is there a special conservation area status for the land between Manchester Cathedral and Victoria Station? I know that Chetham’s new building in the Hunts Bank area is supposed to be sympathetic to this area.
On the other hand, the ultra-modern Urbis building and the complex containing the MEN arena that covers much of the through platform area at Victoria station on the periphery of this mini-area seemed to receive final planning approval without too much trouble, so the proposed new roof as shown in the sketch should pass relatively easily. There will be those who say the very nature of Victoria station should not have any modernistic features ( I have already had six phone calls to this effect!!) but if Manchester Victoria is to be part of a much-needed transport upgrade, helped by the proposals reported by the implications of the Ordsall Chord and with future electrification in mind, it must reflect a vibrant modern 21st Centuary station complex.
Passengers from outside this region have for many years decried Manchester Victoria and the roof area over the current Victoria Metrolink station in particular. It would be good to see the decrepit buildings between Corporation Street and Victoria Station demolished and the area along Corporation Street from Urbis to the rail over-bridge on Cheetham Hill Road that makes a linear frontage of the side of the station complex be subject to sympathetic refurbishment.
