Engineering work in Wigan over Autumn half-term

Wigan engineering worksNetwork Rail plan to replace eight sets of points, renew 1,000 metres of railway line and move signalling and overhead power line equipment to match the new track layout in Wigan. When? From this Saturday (22nd October) and continuing through until the following Sunday (30th October).

Although coinciding with schools’ half-term, there’ll still be disruption to daily commuters. During the week, Atherton line services will only run as far as Hindley and services to Wigan via Bolton will terminate at Bolton. Rail replacement bus services will run on the Kirkby and Southport lines, as well as between Hindley/Bolton and Wigan. By way of compensation, an hourly express train will run between Manchester Victoria and Wigan North Western, giving an early taster of what will happen when Manchester–Scotland trains are diverted to run this way following electrification. Further alterations take place over the two weekends – check the Northern Rail website for full timetables.

Which way are those shuttles running – via Preston?

    • James McCollom says:

They’re scheduled to take around 30 minutes in each direction, so I presume via Eccles and Parkside Junction, in similar fashion to the way the electric Manchester to Scotland services will run.

  2. David Garnett says:

Will the over 60s GMPTE travel cards be valid on this service as the normal valid rail routes are not available

    • James McCollom says:

One you’d have to ask TfGM or Northern Rail, I’m afraid. My opinion is that if it’s running non-stop between two stations in Greater Manchester (and is operated by a company who accept such tickets, which Northern Rail do) then standard “PTE” tickets should be available on it.

      • Paul Sidorczuk says:

I have spoken to TfGM and to Northern Rail on this matter and both say that whilst the train will slightly deviate outside the TfGM boundaries, it is an express non-stop service that is running an emergency short-lived timetable, the holders of the NCTP Over 60’s Card will be able to travel free of charge all weekend and after 0930 from Monday to Friday on this express service.

    • David Garnett says:

I have received a reply from Northern Rail which confirms the GMPTE pass is valid for thos route.
